Optimisme, ook een manier om de naargeestigheid, het cynisme en een steeds donkerder wordende politieke werkelijkheid het hoofd te bieden.
Optimisme omdat het moet.
David Byrne’s nieuwe album American Utopia verschijnt in het kader van het door hem in het leven geroepen project Reasons To Be Cheerful, 
waarmee hij allerlei uitingen verzamelt – muzikale, literaire, fotografische en technische – die moeten zorgen voor hoop.
Een kolfje naar de hand van de oud-Talking Heads-voorman, die met intelligente nummers al zo vaak voor een uitstekend humeur heeft gezorgd.

Op zijn eerste officiële soloplaat sinds 2004 is het uitgangspunt niet zozeer het verlangen naar een perfecte Amerikaanse samenleving zoals de titel suggereert, 
maar veeleer een onderzoek naar de alternatieven voor de samenleving zoals hij nu is. Toch is American Utopia niet alleen maar een hoopgevend album.
Byrne goochelt als vanouds met ritmes, synths en kekke gitaarloopjes, maar in de overwegend midtempo nummers staat de muziek veelal in dienst van wat hij te zeggen heeft.
In I Dance Like This en Gasoline And Dirty Sheets levert hij grimmig commentaar op Trump en de heersende ongelijkheid in de Amerikaanse maatschappij.
‘And the truth don’t mean nothing / If you ain’t got the cash / A creditcard mommy / An invisible dad / Career opportunities that you never had.’ 
Gaandeweg de plaat verschuift zijn focus naar het zoeken naar onderlinge verbinding.
De conclusie in de indrukwekkende afsluiter Here is dan ook dat alles een ‘hier’ is en geen ‘daar’ en het niet gaat om ‘zij’ 
maar om ‘wij’, als je maar een ander gezichtspunt durft te nemen.
Zoals altijd ging Byrne meerdere samenwerkingen aan; onder meer met oude kompaan Brian Eno, met wie hij het feestelijke Everybody’s Coming To My House schreef, 
Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never (This Is That) en Thomas Bartlett aka Doveman.
Wanneer een geëngageerde éminence grise als Byrne spreekt en een broodnodig tegengeluid laat horen, is het zaak te luisteren.
American Utopia is misschien niet een van zijn meest vernieuwende of aanstekelijke platen, wel een van zijn belangrijkste.
